The robot butler that can tend to your every need - even predicting when you want a beer AND pouring it for you

The robot butler that can tend to your every need - even predicting when you want a beer AND pouring it for you

A beer-pouring robot that can read your body movements and anticipate when you want another drink has been developed by American students.

Researchers from Cornell University used Microsoft Kinect sensors and 3D cameras to help the robot analyse its surroundings and identify its owner's needs.

The robot then uses a database of videos showing 120 various household tasks to identify nearby objects, generate a set of possible outcomes and choose which action it should take - without being told. As the actions continue, the robot can constantly update and refine its predictions.

As well as fetching drinks for thirsty owners, the robot can also work out when its owner is hungry and put food in a microwave, tidy up, make cereal, fetch a toothbrush and toothpaste, open fridge doors and more. Ashutosh Saxena, Cornell's professor of computer science and co-author of a new study tied to the research: 'We extract the general principles of how people behave.
'Drinking coffee is a big activity, but there are several parts to it.

The robot builds a 'vocabulary' of such small parts that it can put together in various ways to recognise a variety of big activities.' The robot was initially programmed to refill a person’s cup when it was nearly empty.

To do this the robot had to plan its movements in advance and then follow this plan.

But if a human sitting at the table happens to raise the cup and drink from it, the robot was put off and could end up pouring the drink into a cup that isn’t there.

After extra programming the robot was updated so that when it sees the human reaching for the cup, it can anticipate the human action and avoid making a mistake.

During tests, the robot made correct predictions 82 per cent of the time when looking one second into the future, 71 per cent correct for three seconds and 57 per cent correct for 10 seconds.

Apple’s new iPod touch 16GB gets India pricing

Apple’s new iPod touch 16GB gets India pricing

Apple today sneaked a new 16GB model of the iPod touch without an iSight camera. No press release was issued to announce the product and it simply appeared in Apple’s online stores. While the US store lists the price at $229, there has not been any official announcement about its price in India. However, people familiar with the matter, have confirmed to BGR India that it has been priced at an MRP of Rs 17,800. While it does sound pretty expensive, considering $229 should have meant a price under Rs 15,000, Apple has typically priced iPod touch models on the higher side in India. The $299 iPod touch 32GB for instance is priced at Rs 23,900 in India.

Sources have also confirmed that the iPod touch 16GB variant is likely to be available in the next fortnight or so. On the features front, it features the same 4-inch Retina Display like other variants in the fifth-generation iPod touch as well as an A5 dual-core processor. However, Apple has removed the rear iSight camera though there is a front-facing camera to make FaceTime calls. It can shoot videos in 720p and click pictures at 1.2-megapixel resolution.

The future of glass technology!

The future of glass technology!

Here is another conceptual video created by Corning Incorporated in "A day made of glass." It goes through what would be your typical day scenario waking up at your beautiful luscious estate, by your wife with model good looks, as the photovoltaic glass reveals yet another perfect day in pleasantville. Followed by various interaction with every piece of glass you encounter throughout the day being touch sensitive, electronic enabled displays. This is a novel idea and as for as long as I can remember has been a common representation of the future where all surfaces are interactive. While the concept was focused around the future of glass, I would've loved to see some other future elements incorporated into the video like hovering cars that drive themselves, holographic communication, or omelet ready hybrid bell peppers with infused eggs substitute. How soon do you think this glass future will be a reality, and what future elements would you like to include?

HTC One Nexus release set for June 26: One Nexus vs Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus

HTC One Nexus release set for June 26: One Nexus vs Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus

Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus Vs HTC One Nexus
See, the Galaxy S4 and HTC One have been mainly different for the native user experience and features they offer. In case of Galaxy S4, it is a brilliant handset with some of Samsung’s matchless multimedia, camera and other user-friendly features, for example Smart Pause, Smart Stay, Air Gestures and more. In case of HTC One, this handset has also grabbed name for its innovative Sense 5 and associated features like a BlinkFeed home screen, a new musical experience and more.

When they happen to run on the stock Android version, all these native UI highlights will disappear. They will have almost the same credentials as far as their software aspects are concerned, and they will have to stand apart on the grounds of their little hardware differences. If you look into their hardware, there are three main areas that we can say the S4 and HTC One are somehow different; display size, camera and form factor.

As we noted it above, HTC One has a smaller 4.7-inch FullHD display, meaning that obviously it results in better pixel density. The Galaxy S4 has a 5-inch 1080p screen at a pixel density of 441-ppi, at the same time. Regarding camera, the One has a really wonderful 4MP UltraPixel camera, which, according to HTC is able to take video and pics in better clarity. It is when the S4 sports a 13MP rear camera, which as analyzed by some specialists, works better than the 4MP UltraPixel camera of HTC One.

Finally, design wise, the One has a brilliant and eye-catching design. With its relatively smaller size, the cute design has always become a reason for the device’s public appeal in global markets. The Galaxy S4 is not falling short in form and design aspects, though. It is also featuring a nice look that any customer may fall in love with.
